Better late than never! And as it happens, in the time it took for you to respond, the notion that Fogh et al had such a profound effect on the way many Danes have come to view themselves over the past decade has gained traction with me:)

My Danish class has begun receiving assignments in a book entitled "Sider af Dansk Kultur" which was published some years ago and contains decidedly more frank and modest claims about the place than I am accustomed to seeing in Politiken. A few of our instructors have also seconded the opinion that "things weren't this bad [regarding nationalism and immigration blowback] back then."

My primary concern with laying the blame at the feet of politicians, however, is that it's a classic way for the people (yes, even in a democracy) to let themselves off the hook.

It sounds like we can both agree that navel-gazing and nationalism were a strong cultural current in Denmark from day one. Fogh or DF or Venstre have had great success by politicizing issues of "Danskhed" and ramping up fringe elements, but none of that would work if it weren't the case that nearly every person born in Denmark, regardless of political persuasion, is instructed from an early age in the importance of so-called "Danish" traditions and values, effectively training them to identify with their birthland and its greatness in contexts as apolitical as birthday parties.

I return to the Danish flag on the cake thing because it's a favorite of mine: I've bored and irritated dozens of Danes with this discussion by now, and I've only found two who will actually grant me that the act of using the Danish flag as a birthday decoration does indeed symbollically link the celebration of an individual's birth with their belonging to the Danish nation.

Note that I don't mean to claim that it makes the birthday boy or girl a nationalist--just that the flag as a symbol of the Kingdom of Denmark remains as such even when stuck in a fresh-baked bun with cream. Most Danes, whether due to brainwashing or fear of seeming like Pia K's freaks, say until they are blue in the face that the Danish flag does not have anything whastoever to do with Denmark on birthdays, as if on that one day of the year it becomes devoid of centuries' worth of stored ingrained symbollism.

Perhaps "nationalism" is too strong a word for it. Call it "trivialized identification with the nation", but the point is that it's the kind of insidious routine crap that enables people like Fogh--or Le Pen or G.W. Bush, for that matter--and that it's important not to forget where the jerks at the top derive their strength from.

Yes, I do think Fogh deserves "credit" for where things are now. True, he didn't turn Denmark into a closed, nationalistic society, but Fogh more than anyone helped to take it to its current level. He made it part of his "New Denmark" push. Before Fogh, even though there was still nationalism in Denmark, there was also a sense that Denmark had to play along by the same conventions as other countries, even grudgingly. Danes also seemed to have a certain humility in Denmark's small size. That's all gone now.

I think Fogh genuinely believes that Denmark is the greatest country in the world, he's that arrogant, but he also knew that the only way he could build a stable coalition with DF is if he got Danes to overcome the stigma of extreme and open nationalism. Liberal Danes have aggressively and successfully pushed the new belief that it's prudish and old-fashioned to be embarrassed about nationalism.

Fogh legitimized DF, and petty nationalism, and all so that he could cling to power.

Is it really fair to give Fogh so much credit for the overabundance of Danish national pride?

Before his time in office, was it uncommon to see headlines and ad campaigns proclaiming that Danish X, Y, or Z was "verdens bedste"? Is putting the Danish flag on everything, including childrens' birthday desserts (something even your most fervent Fogh-hating left-wing Danes will do, claiming it is a harmless tradition that bears no connection to national identity, not even on a subconscious level), a development of the past decade alone? Is Fogh the one behind the myth that "hygge" is a state of euphoria so uniquely obtainable in Denmark that the word cannot even be tranlsated to other world languages?

Fogh may have capitalized on it for political gain, as do DF, but I think you just have to face facts: this is a tiny homogenous country--provinciality and inflated villiage pride come with the territory. My guess is that they always have and always will.
